3G/HSDPA

The cellular provider (Vodacom) make available a service commonly referred to as 3G (3G is actually but one of the protocols used - see here for more on the protocols.) These run on the same network as the voice platform. 3G is ideal if you are a:

  • User who moves around a lot - from home to work,  to a client and to your local cafe. 3G coverage is very wide and no other service matches the portability of 3G. Users can even use it overseas (though roaming charges may apply).
  • User living in an area where other internet services are not available.
  • User looking for a backup to ADSL.
  

Speeds on 3G will differ depending on a variety of factors including the local tower's capabilities, weather, distance from tower, tower congestion and so on but in urban cities, users should achieve speeds in excess of 500kbps and up to 1500kbps.
